EUNET-HRD BEGRÜßT EGMR-URTEIL ZUM SCHUTZ DER LGBTI-RECHTE IN ARMENIEN

EUNET-HRD WELCOMES ECHR RULING ON THE PROTECTION OF LGBTI RIGHTS IN ARMENIA

The European Network for Human Rights and Democracy (EuNet-HRD) welcomes the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the case of Minasyan and others v. Armenia.

The ECHR recognized the rights of LGBTI victims of homophobic and transphobic hate speech. The case, initiated by 14 Armenian human rights defenders, highlights the failure of Armenian courts to address discriminatory language and incitement in newspaper articles from 2014.

The ECHR found violations of Articles 8 and 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights and concluded that the publications spread hatred and hostility against the LGBTI community.

EuNet-HRD emphasizes the need for states to protect against hate speech based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The ruling sets an important precedent and urges Armenian authorities to acknowledge homophobic and transphobic hate speech and implement effective legal measures to protect the rights of the LGBTI community.
