About Us
The non-profit association was founded in 2001 in Halle (Saale), Germany, by Professor Dr. Max Schwab and his colleagues. Its original purpose was to contribute to nature and technology as well as knowledge transfer in Central Germany.
Over the years, the association’s membership has evolved, leading to new societal priorities. The challenges faced by human rights activists, lawyers, human rights organizations, and supporters of democratic governance in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Europe as a whole are of deep concern to all members.
At the 2023 general assembly, it was decided to redefine the association’s purpose and name. As a result, the focus of activities was shifted towards the promotion and support of civil activists, non-governmental organizations, lawyers, and human rights defenders operating in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Europe. This includes assistance in various forms, such as ensuring legal equality, protection against violence and unlawful state interference, and maintaining professional independence from illegal influences.
One way to achieve these goals is by establishing a professional and cooperative network for lawyers, civil and human rights activists, non-governmental organizations, and supporters of democratic governance. There is a significant need for support, collaboration, and networking in this area.
Following the official registration of the statute amendment in the Stendal association registry, the organization was renamed „European Network for Human Rights and Democracy e.V.“
Currently, the network is in its development phase, focusing on both structural and programmatic planning.
